These Students Launched a New Scotland Pound into Space

The Royal Bank of Scotland introduced its first new 10 pound polymer banknote on October 4. Now you’ll see Mary Somerville: A famous astronomer and mathematician on the front side of the new currency. On the back side, you’ll see a pair of otters together, as shown below.

She was officially chosen by the local people through a public vote on social media. "It is fitting that the public vote led to the choice of Mary Somerville, a person who helped advance our understanding of the world which surrounds us and the stars above us," according to BBC News.
In honor of her achievements and contribution throughout her lifetime, students from St. Stephen's and Newhill elementary schools in Blairgowrie, United Kingdom, decided to help the Royal Bank of Scotland send the new 10 pound to space.
The students were helped by local scientists. Together they used a weather balloon to send the new banknote 38,500 meters above the earth's atmosphere from their school. Watch this video to see what happened with their experiment.
