Budget-Friendly Spring Break Destinations

Spring break is a chance to reset. After a long winter, most of us want sunshine, good food, and a change of scenery. The good news is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get it. In 2026, there are several international destinations where you can stretch your dollar further.

Order currency online with CXI and get it securely delivered to your doorstep as soon as tomorrow.

Below are budget-friendly spring break options where you can match your travel personality to the right setting:

Cancún, Mexico

Cancún has long been a spring break favorite, and for good reason. Short flight times from the U.S. and a generally favorable exchange rate with the Mexican peso help keep the overall costs manageable.

Cancún is perfect for travelers who want sun-soaked beaches, lively energy, and the option to either relax or party depending on the day. It works for friend groups, couples, first-time travelers, and anyone who likes having lots of activity choices without the logistical stress. Cancún is also perfect for families as all-inclusive resorts have endless kid-friendly amenities.

Spend your mornings swimming in water so blue it looks edited and feel the sand between your toes just wash all your worries away. Beyond the beaches in the Hotel Zone, you can go for a dip at nearby cenotes such as Cenote Azul or Dos Ojos, natural freshwater pools surrounded by limestone walls where sunlight filters through and brightens the water.

If you want an island escape, take a short public ferry to Isla Mujeres, a small island just offshore where you can spend the day at the beach of Playa Norte, known for its shallow water and soft sand. For history, dedicate a day-trip to the Tulum ruins or the world famous Chichén Itzá, one of the most iconic Mayan archaeological sites in Mexico.

Everyday Costs

Cash is still essential in Mexico. Many beach vendors, small taco stands, local buses (colectivos), and market stalls operate on cash only

A cappuccino averages $2.50 USD. Meals at inexpensive restaurants typically cost $12 - $18 USD, while fast food combos go for $5 - $7 USD. Most restaurants expect a 10% - 15% tip in cash.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Spend your mornings on Bávaro Beach, a long stretch of soft sand lined with palm trees and gentle waves perfect for swimming. Offshore day trips include catamaran cruises or visits to Isla Saona, a small tropical island where the water looks almost glass‑clear. If you want something more active, ATV tours and snorkeling trips are easy to arrange and take you through nearby villages and coastal spots.

Between excursions, try local Dominican dishes like mangú, grilled chicken, or seafood plates served in casual, open‑air restaurants. The rhythm here is simple: enjoy the beach, enjoy the food, and enjoy the unhurried atmosphere.

Everyday Costs

Cash plays a major role in Punta Cana as many employees such as resort staff and cab drivers depend heavily on tips to afford a living, which can only be done in cash.

A cappuccino costs between $1 - $2.50 USD and local meals range from $6 - $20. If service charge is not included, a 10% tip is expected.

Costa Rica: Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio

Costa Rica suits travelers who want beaches and wildlife. It’s great for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone who enjoys a calm, scenic environment. While it’s not the cheapest destination in Central America, it often feels affordable compared to U.S. coastal cities during peak spring travel.

In Guanacaste, you’ll find golden beaches, surf towns, and sunsets that feel like an experience themselves. Days might include surfing, paddle boarding, or simply relaxing while the tide rolls in.

Manuel Antonio offers a more jungle‑meets‑beach environment. Its national park has well‑marked trails that lead to quiet coves and beaches, and spotting monkeys or sloths along the way is extremely common.

Adventure options include ziplining through forest canopies, taking a guided wildlife tour, or joining a boat trip along mangrove waterways. Meals often come from casual “sodas,” which are Costa Rican diners serving simple, comforting plates of rice, beans, plantains, and meat or fish.

Everyday Costs

Surf instructors and park entrances may be cash only or charge extra for cards. In remote areas, frequent internet outages can interrupt card processing.

Carrying Costa Rican colones ensures you’re not stuck without a way to pay especially in emergency situations.

Inexpensive meals at sodas cost between $4 - $9 USD. Tipping is common for tour guides and instructors to show your appreciation. However, restaurants in Costa Rica typically have a mandatory 10% service fee on top of a 13% tax rate so tipping is not expected at restaurants.

Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena is an excellent pick for travelers who enjoy history, colorful architecture, walkable streets, and easy access to beaches and islands.

Begin your day wandering the Walled City, where bright buildings, flower‑covered balconies, and plaza cafés set a warm and lively scene. Head into the Getsemaní neighborhood for street art, music, and casual eateries where you can sample local snacks like arepas and fresh juices which make for tasty, inexpensive meals. For a deeper historical view, explore Castillo San Felipe, a hilltop fortress overlooking the coastline.

If you want beach time, book a simple boat ride to the Rosario Islands, a small archipelago known for clear water and quiet beaches. It’s an easy way to spend the day swimming or snorkeling before returning to Cartagena for rooftop dining or an evening walk along the old city walls

Everyday Costs

Cash is widely used here. Street vendors, taxis, small cafes, and island boat operators frequently operate on a cash basis.

A local meal averages $6 - $15 USD, and a pint of beer costs roughly $1.90 USD.
