Last-Minute Summer Escapes Worth Booking Now

If summer is slipping by without a trip on your calendar, now is the perfect time to plan a last-minute escape. August and September are some of the best months to explore new places where the weather is warm and the days are long.

These five destinations offer the kind of experiences that don’t require months of planning. Just book your ticket, pack your suitcase, and go.

Montenegro

Montenegro

Montenegro offers coastal towns, clear water, and dramatic scenery without the high prices or heavy crowds of more well-known European destinations.

One of the best areas to stay is Perast, a small town on the Bay of Kotor with direct access to the water. You can swim off the stone docks, enjoy outdoor cafes by the marina, and take a quick boat tour to Our Lady of the Rocks. Admire the architectural beauty of the Bujovic and Smekja Palaces.

The town is peaceful and features several amazing restaurants and waterfront bars. Foodies will love the fresh grilled fish, black risotto, and octopus salad that these restaurants serve. And don’t forget to wash it all down with a Vranac, a Montenegro special red wine.

From Perast or nearby Kotor, rent a car for the day and drive into the mountains to visit Lovcen National Park. The winding road leads to the Njegos Mausoleum, where a short walk up the stairs rewards you with panoramic views over the entire bay. Whilst at the top, you’ll find there are small stands selling some of the best local cheeses, cured meats, and figs.

When it comes to currency, Montenegro uses the euro.

Puglia, Italy

Puglia, Italy

Puglia is a region in southern Italy known for its coastal towns, historic centers, and relaxed atmosphere. It’s ideal for travelers who want a mix of beach time, good food, and short drives between stops.

Base yourself in Monopoli, a walkable seaside town with whitewashed buildings and small family-run restaurants. Spend your mornings wandering through the old town, then head to Cala Porta Vecchia for a quick dip.

Currency Tip: Chairs and umbrellas are only available for rent, and cash is the only acceptable method of payment most of the time.

If you want to embark on a short road trip, drive inland to Valle d’Itria. This area is known for its hilltop towns like Cisternino and Locorotondo, both peaceful and scenic with outdoor terraces and small wine bars. For something more unique, visit Alberobello to see the traditional cone-shaped trulli houses.

Menus in Puglia often feature orecchiette pasta, seafood risotto, seasonal vegetables, and grilled lamb. Local olive oil is a staple, and white wines like Verdeca or Fiano pair well with most dishes.

Azores, Portugal

Azores, Portugal

The Azores feels remote in the best way. Wild landscapes, quiet villages, and natural hot springs. Sao Miguel is the easiest island to visit and ideal for a laid-back “I need a break” summer trip.

Start your visit at Sete Cidades, one of the island’s most famous views. Go early in the morning to Boca do Inferno, a short trail with a sweeping lookout over twin crater lakes. If it’s cloudy, just wait it out, the fog often clears within an hour.

For a slower day, head to Furnas, a town known for its geothermal activity. Relax in the hot pools at Poca da Dona Beija or explore Terra Nostra Park, which has a giant thermal pool surrounded by gardens. You’ll also find natural swimming spots along the coast, like the tide pools at Caldeira Velha or the islet of Vila Franco, which you can visit by boat.

Bring a swimsuit where you go, even short walks often lead to places where you’ll want to jump in!

Portugal’s currency is the European euro which you will need for small cafes, hot springs, and roadside shops that don’t accept cards.

Slovenia

Slovenia Travel

Slovenia is easy to travel around, plus its full of natural beauty and walkable towns. It works well for a short trip or a stop as part of a longer itinerary through Central Europe

If you’re visiting in summer, spend at least one night in Bled. The lake is beautiful in the early morning, and you can walk the full loop in about an hour. You can also rent a wooden boat to row to the small island in the middle or take the stairs up to the Ojstrica viewpoint for a photo of the lake from above.

A short taxi ride away is Lake Bohinj, which feels less developed and more peaceful. It’s a great spot for a swim or a picnic, and there are several short hiking trails that start near the lake. If the weather is clear, take the cable car up Mount Vogel for a view of the surrounding peaks.

Ljubljana, the capital, is compact and full of character. You’ll find cafes along the river, open-air markets, and pedestrian streets that are easy to explore. The food here blends Central European and Mediterranean influences, and many restaurants use ingredients from local farms.

Slovenia's official currency is the euro, so make sure to order in advance for home delivery or pick up at a branch near you

Nova Scotia, Canada

Nova Scotia, Canada

Nova Scotia is all about fresh seafood, scenic drives, and getting away from all the big city problems.

Visit Lunenburg, a small town with a working harbor and colorful historic buildings. The waterfront has a few casual places to eat where you have to try the lobster rolls and the scallop burgers. The streets are full of local shops and art galleries that you can explore.

Then make your way to Cape Breton Island. The Cabot Trail is one of Canada’s best-known drives for good reason. It’s not just about the views, there are short hikes, roadside seafood shacks, and plenty of places to pull over and just take your time. The Skyline Trail is an easy loop with one of the best coastal views in the province.

Nova Scotia is also known for its whale watching tours which are available throughout late summer, Brier Island is one of the most reliable spots to see these majestic animals.
