Switzerland Travel: Mountains, Lakes, and Things to Explore

If you’re one of those who dreams of mild weather, towering mountains, and crystal-clear lakes, Switzerland travel might just be the thing that you’re looking for this season. Here, you’ll find a nice mix of outdoor activities to do in, as well as charming cities to visit and local celebrations to take part in. Let’s take a look at some of the must-sees and dos while at this unforgettable destination.

Take a Ride on the Glacier Express

The Glacier Express is a magical train route that connects the luxury resort town of St. Moritz with Zermatt, home of the iconic Matterhorn. Zipping through the country on a Switzerland train is the best way to see the emblematic landscapes, breathtaking Alps, and charming villages. Along the way, you’ll get to see the towering mountains, storybook villages, and panoramic views of the country's famous bridges. The train also has gourmet dining, comfy seating and accommodations, and top-notch service.

While St. Moritz is known for its glitzy ski resorts that draw in crowds in the winter, there are plenty of activities to enjoy outdoors in the autumn. The nearby lakes and mountains are perfect for water sports, mountaineering, and cycling. In town, you can indulge in some shopping, browse museums, and enjoy delicious dining options.

Similarly, Zermatt is a paradise for those who want to explore the outdoors. You can ski in the summer or hike the Matterhorn Glacier Trail while exploring Switzerland’s natural beauty. There are plenty of scenic lakes on the trail that reflect impressive views of the mountains. While Zermatt’s car-free status is often mentioned, few truly appreciate how it creates a peaceful atmosphere filled with fresh mountain air and quiet cobblestone streets—a rare and cherished luxury in bustling tourist destinations.

Marvel at the Blue Waters of Lake Lucerne

One of the best places to visit in Switzerland is Lake Lucerne. The weather is mild and comfortable, the gardens are lush and blooming with flowers, and the medieval town is like something out of a fairy tale. The main draw is, of course, the sparkling blue waters of the lake itself, with the Alps looming in the distance.

The lake offers a nice breeze and invites you to sit and enjoy a coffee or drink while enjoying the views. There are several spots where you can jump in and have a swim, or enjoy water sports like windsurfing, wakeboarding, paddle surfing, and tubing. If you’re looking for a relaxed experience, a boat ride around the lake might be more your speed.

Attend a Seasonal Festival

Switzerland Wine Festival

Summer is buzzing with activity in Switzerland, especially when it comes to festivals, fairs, and celebrations. There are festivals to cover all interests, but some of the biggest are related to music, like the Zurich Openair and Openair Gampel. You’ll also find smaller festivals related to theater, cinema, and classical music.

In the fall, many regions celebrate harvest festivals, especially those centered around cattle and grapes. Alpazbug is an ancient end-of summer harvest festival that dates back thousands of years and marks the cows coming home for the season. The Zurich Wine Festival, in October, features more than 450 wines and has events like tastings and masterclasses. Not just wine: this year’s event is elevated with a cocktail lounge featuring classic Italian aperitifs—from Negroni to Spritz—alongside a buffet of Italian culinary specialties crafted to complement the flavors and complete the experience.

A can't-miss is the Basel Autumn Fair, one of Europe's oldest festivals, which takes place in late October. From Barfüsserplatz to Messeplatz, and from Petersplatz to the cathedral, you can enjoy breathtaking rides, traditional fair stalls, and nostalgic attractions across seven vibrant fairgrounds.

Off-Season (Nov-Mar) Tip: Visit the Lavaux Vinorama. It's a wine museum that's often overlooked. In the fall, it's quieter and you can sample and buy wines without the usual rush.
