Why Malta Should Be Your Next European Getaway

Maytal April 27th, 2026
Why Malta Should Be Your Next European Getaway

Malta is a tiny island nation in the Mediterranean that’s about the size of Philadelphia. What it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in vibrancy, culture, and beauty. With centuries of history layered into its cities, crystal-clear waters, and a relaxed island pace, Malta punches well about its weight as a travel destination.

It’s a great place to visit on its own or as a stop when hopping between other European hotspots like Italy, Spain, or Greece. Best of all, Malta is compact and connected, you can get around fairly easily without the need for a car by using buses, ferries, and walking paths.

So if the smallest country in the EU wasn’t on your radar before, here’s what you need to know about Malta travel and why it should be your next vacation destination.

Currency: Euro

Culture and History in Valletta and Mdina

Malta’s capital, Valletta, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s easy to get around on foot or by bike. Valetta was built by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century, so you’ll find breathtaking Baroque architecture, including grand fortifications, ornate balconies, and St. John's Co-Cathedral.

Because the city is so walkable, joining a guided walking tour or food tour is one of the best ways to experience Valletta's history, culture, and traditional Maltese cuisine.

Cash is often useful here for:

  • Tipping tour guides
  • Small food vendors and bakeries
  • Museum donations or church offerings

You also can’t miss a water taxi ride to the historic towns across Grand Harbour. Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua, the Three Cities, are walled towns that have narrow, winding streets and relaxed vibes. Once there, enjoy getting lost in the little alleys, stepping into beautiful churches, or enjoying amazing seafront views.

Currency Tip: Water taxis and small cafes may prefer cash, so having euros on hand is helpful.

Just 30 minutes from Valletta is Mdina, Malta’s ancient capital. It dates back to the Phoenicians and was the center of power until medieval times. Known as the "Silent City," it's a peaceful escape with dramatic views and quiet, stone-lined streets. Points of interest include St. Paul’s Cathedral and Catacombs, Mdina Gate, and the Mdina Dungeons Museum.

Sun and Sea at the Blue Lagoon

Those looking for sunshine and to take a dip in turquoise waters should head to the Blue Lagoon. It’s one of the top things to do in Malta, especially in the summer, but try going in shoulder months like May-June and September-October. You can still enjoy the magic of the sparkling blue waters between the islands of Comino and Cominotto with fewer crowds.

The Lagoon is the perfect spot to try water activities like swimming, jet skiing, and snorkeling. There are also many boat tours available. Hop aboard to discover beautiful beaches, mysterious sea caves, and unbeatable views of the sparkling Mediterranean.

Cash if often needed for:

  • Boat tours
  • Sunbed and umbrella rentals
  • Snacks and drinks sold by beach vendors

Take a Day Trip to Gozo

After exploring the sights on the main island and the Blue Lagoon, take a ferry over to the island of Gozo for a day trip. This island has been inhabited for thousands of years by various civilizations, including Romans, Phoenicians, and Sicilians, giving it a rich historical backbone paired with a laid-back atmosphere.

Start your sightseeing at the Cittadella, a fortress that goes back several centuries. Continue to the Ggantija temples, a UNESCO Site that is older than the Egyptian pyramids. As you wander, make time to browse the unique shops and sample the local specialities like olive oil, cheese, honey, and tomatoes.

Money Tips for Traveling in Malta

Malta adopted the euro in 2008, replacing the former Maltese Lira, making it easy for travelers visiting from other eurozone countries.

While credit cards and debit cards are widely accepted, especially in hotels, cash remains useful for tips, tours, public transportation, ferries, markets, and smaller towns like Mdina and Gozo.
