4 Reasons To Make Canada Your Next Trip

4 Reasons To Make Canada Your Next Trip

Canada is right on America's doorstep, yet most travelers fly past it in favor of destinations that take far longer to reach. That's a mistake worth correcting. Here are four unique Canada travel experiences, some of which may be a short drive away depending on where you live.

1. Banff and Lake Louise, Alberta

The photos you’ve seen of Lake Louise are the real deal. The water really is that shade of turquoise, fed by glacial runoff in a way that changes color depending on the light and time of year. Banff National Park surrounds it all with enough Rocky Mountain terrain to fill a week of nonstop hiking.

These are some of the best activities you can do in Banff and Lake Louise:

  • Hike the Plain of Six Glaciers trail for views that earn every uphill step.

  • Drive the Icefields Parkway and budget extra time for stops, because pulling over constantly to admire the views is the whole point. It has often been ranked as one of the most scenic drives in the world, this stretch road between Lake Louise and Jasper National Park passes waterfalls, hanging glaciers, and turquoise lakes at nearly every turn.

  • Canoe on Lake Louise in the early morning. The water is calm, the mountains are reflected like a perfect oil painting, and the tour groups haven't arrived yet. It's one of those rare moments where a famous spot feels personal.

  • Explore Banff town itself: Beyond the trails, Banff offers hot springs, local breweries, and a walkable main street framed by mountain views.

2. Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver puts you in the mountains and on the ocean at the same time, which is something most cities can't pull off. You can hike through coastal rainforest, paddle on the ocean, and eat at a world-class restaurant (sometimes all in the same day).

Start your morning in Stanley Park, where miles of forested trails wind past towering cedar trees before opening suddenly onto ocean views and skyline backdrops. The seawall loop alone offers hours of biking or walking. From there, stop by Granville Island's public market to graze through vendors selling fresh seafood, local cheeses, artisan bread, and handmade goods.

For dinner, Vancouver's food scene is one of its defining features. The city's proximity to Asia and its immigrant communities mean you'll find some of the best Asian cuisine in North America, whether that's dim sum, ramen, sushi, or authentic Chinese dishes. Vancouver also is famous for its Pacific Northwest seafood showcasing spot prawns, Dungeness crab, and wild salmon, all paired with local British Columbia (BC) wines.

If time allows, Vancouver also serves as a launchpad for easy day trips. You can cross a suspension bridge at Capilano, ride a gondola up Grouse Mountain, or even catch a ferry to Vancouver Island.

3. Quebec City, Quebec

Quebec City is the closest thing to a European trip without leaving the continent. The moment you enter Old Quebec, the atmosphere changes completely. Cobblestone streets curve between stone buildings dating back to the 17th- and 18th-century architecture, balconies overflow with flowers in warmer months, and cafe terraces invite you to linger longer than planned.

The historic Upper Town is crowned by the Château Frontenac, a hotel so dramatic that it feels more like a castle than accomodation. From its terraces, you can look out over St. Lawrence River and watch ships pass below the cliffs.

French is the everyday language here, giving the city a distinctly different rhythm compared to the rest of Canada, but English is widely spoken and understood.

If your timing lines up with February, the Winter Carnival is one of the most distinctive festivals in North America. It runs for 17 days and fills the city with ice sculpture competitions and snow slides built directly into the Old Town streets.

No matter the season, food plays a central role. Dishes like poutine, tourtière, and maple-forward desserts reflect the region's French roots with a Canadian twist.

4. Nova Scotia

Whale watching in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia moves at a pace that most of the East Coast abandoned decades ago. Fishing towns and wooden lighthouses cover the jagged coastline, which makes this province perfect for a road trip. If you've ever seen those TV shows that depict a small, quiet, cozy town, that's the perfect way to describe Nova Scotia.

You can anchor your trip around some of these experiences:

  • Whale watching off Digby Neck: Fin whales and humpbacks feed in the Bay of Fundy, and the sighting rates here are high enough that most tours deliver on the promise.

  • Seafood chowder tasting: Nova Scotia takes chowder seriously. Thick, creamy bowls loaded with scallops, lobster, and haddock are best enjoyed at the waterfront shacks where the view rivals the meal.
